WHAT IS THE ANSWER TO MY UTERINE FIBROID QUESTION?”  A PATIENT ASKS HER INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGIST AND GYNECOLOGIST

Section # 3

Page #1

If the fibroids are infarcted (considered dead) in the woman's body why doesn't the body cause an infection to occur as a rejection process after the Uterine Artery Embolization procedure?

How does the woman's body absorb the fibroid tissue after UAE? What will absorbing the fibroid tissue do to her body and how is it eliminated?

Are there particular uterine fibroids that cause a UAE patient to slough uterine fibroid discharge during the recovery process?  How long does this process last?  What percentage of your patients experienced sloughing of fibroid discharge?

I have read that uterine fibroids located inside the uterus can be passed after having UAE?  How is the incident of uterine fibroid tissue getting “stuck” in the cervix or becomes secondarily infected (or both) handled?  How or why does this happen and how many cases have you experienced of uterine fibroid expulsion?  Is there a big difference on how the internal uterine fibroids are passed compared to the external uterine fibroids?

Did you ever have a patient go into early menopause after having the UAE procedure done?  If yes, what should the woman do if she no longer gets a period and what will the woman experience when this happens?

What causes the strong “wave-like” pattern of pain (similar to labor pain) to occur in some uterine fibroid patients?

When is a UAE patient considered to be cured of the disease?

How do you keep the entire uterine artery from being clogged?

Have any women ever expelled the plastic particles with their fibroid tissue discharge?

What is the longest period of time (months) that a woman could experience expelling fibroid tissue?

How long should women wait before using tampons after having the UAE procedure performed?

Page #2 (Pregnancy questions)

Can the ovarian artery be clogged by the particles?

Will new blood vessels grow to supply the uterine fibroids?

Do uterine fibroids ever grow back after UAE?

Why do some women have a temporary loss of appetite after having the UAE procedure performed?

Can UAE help a patient with endometriosis and uterine fibroids?

I understand adenomyosis can sometimes be mistaken for uterine fibroids.  What preliminary procedure will confirm which disease a woman is experiencing?  Can UAE get rid of adenomyosis or help the patient?

Hysterectomy can cause side effects such as a loss of sexual pleasure.  Will the UAE procedure cause a loss of sexual pleasure or a decrease in sexual orgasms?

Can you please define “recovery” from a hysterectomy more in detail?

Since the UAE cuts off blood supply to the fibroids, does this mean that birth control methods can be eliminated?

Have any of the women you performed the Uterine Artery Embolization procedure on become pregnant?

How soon after giving birth is it ok to have a consultation concerning my uterine fibroids (the fibroids are growing)?

My husband and I are married for several years and we had been trying to conceive with no success.  Just a week ago I had an ultrasound performed and uterine fibroids were diagnosed. I don’t understand the terminology on the report.  What does it mean for me to get pregnant?  I am so worried and frustrated.

How long should a UAE patient wait before trying to conceive?

I had a uterine artery embolization on 10/13/05 and just yesterday found out I am now pregnant.  My doctor suggests I terminate my pregnancy.  Is there major risks to my baby because of this procedure?  I was not expecting to be pregnant but here I am.

How soon after a birth can a woman have the UAE procedure performed?

I have uterine fibroids.  I don't have fibroid symptoms.  I have been trying to get pregnant for more than two years.

I am pregnant (three months) and I have a 7-8 cm uterine fibroid.   Is there any medical treatments or surgical procedures that can be used during my pregnancy to eliminate/shrink the fibroid?

I had a myomectomy performed and my doctor suggested I should wait three months before trying to become pregnant.  What is the reason for this timeframe?

Can a pedunculated, subserosal fibroid cause discomfort when you are moving around?  Are birth control pills safe to take when you have a fibroid?  Will the fibroid location cause a negative effect on a pregnancy?
