Please pick out the questions that are best suited for your
medical situation.
UAE ONLY:
GYN: What is your opinion of the
Uterine Artery
Embolization procedure? Do you refer your patients to an
Interventional Radiologist (IR) for the UAE procedure?
IR: What type of embolic material
(particles) will you be using for my procedure? What does the
particles look like (sample)? How much will you be using for my
case?
Has the doctor received the proper training for the UAE procedure?
How many UAE procedures have you personally performed? Will you be
performing my UAE personally? How many UAE procedures do you do each
day/week? (UAE Training Standards)
Would UAE be the best procedure for me because I am considered a high risk
due to all of my medical problems?
What are the complications with UAE?
What is your success rate with the UAE procedure? How is the success
rate measured?
How much pain should I expect when the fibroids are cut off from their
oxygen and blood supply? Will my body absorb the fibroid tissue?
Could I experience
sloughing
(expelling) fibroid tissue or expelling the entire fibroid?
Could the embolic material (particles) block the ovarian artery and cause
ovarian failure and infertility?
Will my fibroids grow back after a UAE?
What kind of doctor follow-up does he/she perform? Will the doctor
be there to answer every e-mail or phone call? Will the doctor have
their nurse or an intern do it? How long will I be under the IR
care? Will there be consultations between my GYN and IR about my
medical situation if a problem should arise? (Refer to IR questions)
MYOMECTOMY ONLY:
GYN: Do you perform the
myomectomy procedure?
What types have you been trained in and perform (laparotomy,
hysteroscopic, laparoscopic)? Do you perform the myomectomy
personally? How often do you do them? How many in one day?
How many have you performed?
Can a myomectomy change in mid-stream into a hysterectomy because of
complications at the time of surgery? What is the chance you may
need to do a hysterectomy?
Please explain the risk of
fluid overload during
the hysteroscopic myomectomy. How is it monitored?
What is the success rate for a myomectomy (laparotomy, hysteroscopic,
laparoscopic)? How do you measure the success rate?
Ask the doctor for an estimate of the likelihood of needing further
surgery for additional fibroids after a myomectomy.
What is the follow-up care for a myomectomy procedure?
HYSTERECTOMY ONLY:
GYN: What complications could I experience from a
hysterectomy?
Has the doctor received the proper training for the procedure? How
many hysterectomies have you personally performed? Will you be performing
my hysterectomy personally? How many procedures do you do each day/week?
Do you perform ALL of the hysterectomy procedures (laparoscopic,
vaginal, etc.)?
What is the success rate for a hysterectomy? How do you measure
this?
What are the benefits/risks for a hysterectomy?
