Preventing
Bone Loss From Breast Cancer Meds
Ivanhoe
Newswire) – An osteoporosis drug protects against the bone
damaging effects of certain breast cancer medications.
According to this study, some breast cancer patients could
take zoledronic acid in addition to their
anti-cancer medications to maintain bone health.
Drugs called aromatase inhibitors stop the production of
estrogen in postmenopausal women and therefore make less
estrogen available to stimulate the growth of certain breast
cancer cells. Many postmenopausal women with breast cancer
are routinely treated for several years with these
potentially life-saving drugs, but the agents can cause bone
loss and fractures. More at:

For dense breasts tissue is
a mammogram enough?
Nancy Cappello, Ph.D
received a normal mammogram result and two months later was
diagnosed with Stage 3c breast cancer after her physician
detected an abnormality during a routine exam. The
cancer had been growing for 4-5 years and wasn’t detected by
a regular mammogram. 40% of women have dense breasts. Fewer
than 10% are aware of it. Should women with dense breasts
get a supplemental yearly ultrasound too? Should they ask
their doctors if they have dense
breast tissue?
Non-profit: DENSE - Please
help reveal this best kept secret about the limitations of
mammography alone to detect cancer in women with dense
breast tissue.
If you would like Dr. Nancy Cappello
to speak to your group or organization, email her at

Several
studies and news items released this year.
January: Experimental drug called
Iniparib, part of the class of drugs called PARP
inhibitor, gets mixed reviews against hard-to-treat advanced
triple-negative breast cancers. Clinical trials will
continue.
February: FDA
approves the first 3-D mammography device, which could
reduce the need for follow-up screening in some patients. A
large study indicates that some breast cancer patients might
be able to skip lymph node removal. Study was published in
Journal of American Medical Association.
June: FDA monitor silicone gel-filled
implants shows that there is no increased risk of breast
cancer or autoimmune disease from the implants.
However, it does show that many women with the implants need
additional surgery for repairs or replacements within 10
years.
FDA approves new test, called Inform Dual ISH,
to determine HER2 status of breast cancer cells.
FDA
panel votes that the drug Avastin should no longer
be labeled for use in breast cancer patients. FDA has not
yet made a final ruling.
Medicare says it will still
pay for Avastin.
July:
National Comprehensive Cancer Network votes to continue
supporting the use of Avastin for breast cancer treatment.
Primary care doctors don’t consistently recommend gene
testing for women who are at high risk of breast cancer;
study published in the journal Cancer.
Large study
published in Journal of National Cancer Institute finds that
women with dense breasts are more likely to be diagnosed
with breast cancer, and the cancer is likely to be more
aggressive.
